Burel Mountain Originals is a 100% Portuguese brand that was born with the aim of saving a patrimony and a historical framework in Portugal. A Serra da Estrela brand made from the most typical fabric of the region – Burel, 100% wool.
The history of the burel is long and full of chapters that helped define one of the most mysteriously dense regions of Portugal: the region of Serra da Estrela mountain range, which, for centuries, was isolated from the rest of the world to create its very own specifications that the days transformed into culture. And a culture that started to disappeared over time, and threatened to forsake a population that saw it as the only source of subsistence. A story that ran the risk of being unfinished.
It was at the top of that mountain that the lifeline was launched and two mountain explorers decided to recover an ancestral factory that was felling into “illness”, losing their strength because it couldn’t keep pace with the new days. It was in those mountains that it was decided to recover the burel which was still so traditional and monochromatic. It was decided to give it color and a new life through design. It was the contemporary design, coupled with tradition and quality woven by the generations, that made the special fabric awaken to the world and that awakened the world to it. It was the fashion, decoration and architectural pieces that put it back in the showrooms, workshops, companies and homes. It was the design that saved it.
Burel is a fabric made from 100% wool that after being beaten and boiled, becomes denser and guarantees incredible versatility and resistance, which make the fabric the perfect natural solution to be used in decoration, fashion, accessories, interior design and architecture. With the production to be made in the same way that it has always been, in nineteenth century looms, in the heart of the mountain, at Burel Factory of the village of Manteigas, a factory that is part of that mountain like any rock and stone, and which today remains alive and pulsating. That matches several generations, which are the only encyclopedias that keep that knowledge alive. With creatives, weavers, designers, seamstresses, architects, artists, shepherds, sheep and wool. Lots of wool. A brand made of people linked by these natural and fibrous threads that today meant creation in Portugal, again, and that is ready to cover the world with the most pure and sustainable sheep wool.
Burel Mountain Originals is a brand that houses many others and continues the mission of enhancing the best of the region. It has the brand Burel Factory, the factory that is also a museum; Mantecas, the brand of its woolen blankets; the Lanifícios Império, the brand of tailoring fabrics; and Burel Mountain Hotels, a concept project consisting of two hotels: Casa das Penhas Douradas – Burel Expedition Hotel and Casa de São Lourenço – Burel Panorama Hotel, the new and unique 5-star mountain hotel in Portugal.
